Strengthening Zambia’s Laboratory Ecosystem
ZNLA’s Progress in Digital Transformation, Quality Advancement, and Strategic Partnerships
The Zambia National Laboratory Association (ZNLA) continues to make steady progress in strengthening laboratory practice, quality assurance, and professional collaboration within Zambia and the broader region. Over the recent period, the Association has recorded several notable milestones aligned with its strategic objectives.
A key achievement has been the successful development and launch of a fully functional ZNLA website. This digital platform represents a major step forward in enhancing member engagement and service delivery. Members are now able to access the website to interact with peers, register for events and training programs, and conveniently make payments online.
Importantly, the website will also host the forthcoming National Laboratory Directory, which the Association is in the process of developing. This directory is expected to serve as a centralized, authoritative database of laboratories in Zambia, providing visibility of their capabilities, scope of services, and areas of specialization. It will enhance access to laboratory services for industry and regulators, promote collaboration and networking among laboratories, support evidence-based decision-making, and improve trust in laboratory results. Furthermore, the directory will play a critical role in identifying gaps in national testing capacity and guiding investment and policy interventions within the quality infrastructure ecosystem.
ZNLA has also sustained its membership drive through targeted stakeholder visits and continuous engagement with laboratories, institutions, and professionals across the country. While the process has been gradual, it is yielding positive results, with increasing interest and enrollment from key stakeholders. The Association remains committed to expanding its membership base to foster inclusivity and strengthen the national laboratory network.
In addition, ZNLA has actively contributed to national development through consultancy services. Notably, the Association is currently participating in a Quality Infrastructure Mapping exercise for Zambia under a project supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). This engagement underscores ZNLA’s growing recognition as a technical partner capable of contributing to national and international initiatives in quality infrastructure and laboratory systems. The Association also continues to work closely with cooperating partners, with recent engagement involving an NGO focused on promoting the production of lead-free paints. This initiative aligns with global efforts to eliminate lead exposure and highlights ZNLA’s role in supporting public health, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance.
In line with national developments, ZNLA is also actively positioning laboratories to become more quality-focused and internationally competitive, particularly in anticipation of the planned establishment of the Zambia Accreditation Agency. Through its training programs, technical guidance, and advocacy, the Association is encouraging laboratories to align with recognized standards and best practices, thereby enhancing their readiness for accreditation and improving the credibility of test and calibration results.
Through these efforts, ZNLA reaffirms its commitment to advancing laboratory practice and contributing to the strengthening of quality infrastructure in Zambia and the region.
