On 13th March 2026, the Zambia National Laboratory Association, represented by its President Ray Kamekela and Mr. Andrew Chipongo, held a strategic engagement with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization team currently in Zambia. The meeting formed part of the ongoing Standards Compliance Analytics and Quality Infrastructure Assessment initiative being implemented in the country.

The engagement took place at the ZNLA Secretariat, located within the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, and provided a valuable platform for dialogue on the current state and future direction of Zambia’s laboratory ecosystem.

Strengthening Zambia’s Laboratory Network

Discussions during the meeting centered on gaining a deeper understanding of Zambia’s laboratory landscape. Key focus areas included:

The structure and distribution of the national laboratory network
Existing testing capacities and identified gaps
Accreditation status of laboratories across sectors
Coordination mechanisms among laboratories

Particular emphasis was placed on how these elements contribute to enhancing Zambia’s agri-food export competitiveness. The conversation highlighted the critical role that well-coordinated, accredited, and adequately equipped laboratories play in meeting international standards and facilitating trade.

Opportunities for Collaboration

A significant outcome of the meeting was the positive indication of potential collaboration between ZNLA and UNIDO. The discussions explored the possibility of ZNLA undertaking consultancy work under the ongoing initiative. While this presents a promising opportunity, it remains subject to further engagement, particularly around the development and agreement of detailed Terms of Reference and contractual frameworks.

Looking Ahead

This interaction underscores ZNLA’s growing role as a key stakeholder in advancing quality infrastructure and laboratory systems in Zambia. By engaging with international partners such as UNIDO, ZNLA continues to position itself at the forefront of efforts aimed at strengthening compliance, improving standards, and supporting national economic development through enhanced export readiness.

Further updates will be shared as discussions progress and partnerships are formalized.
